Week 4: My Beginning at Capernwray
Last weekend was so busy, and internet is not very convenient during the week, so I was not able to make an update. If you didn’t know, I’ve made the move from Oxford to Capernwray last weekend. The trip up was nice, I had a nice talk with some folks from Canada and America on the bus ride up. The majority of the school really is North Americans, slightly disappointing, but encouraging that the friends I make I’ll be able to see more often afterwards. But there are a number of people from all over the world, and it’s exciting to get to know them all. People from Iceland, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and Russia just to name a few.
School Schedule
From Monday to Friday we have six 50 min lectures a day, four in the morning and two in the evening — they have been a mixture of introduction and excellent teaching and workshops. On Friday mornings there is a seminar that half the school attends, while the other half does some cleaning and working. The groups switch every other week. There’s a good chunk of free time between lunch at 1 and “tea” (a.k.a supper in North America speak) at 5:45. Saturday is free (aside from our daily duties), and they usually set up a trip or something that is optional. This week was a trip to the Lake District. I was able to go, and it was beautiful. The village after our long walk was really strange, because it’s whole essence was way different than at any other City or Town I’ve been on. Then Sundays are a basically a day of worship. We have Church in the morning and evening, but between is a lot of free time the same.
Reading Aloud
As a part of our course we have to read the entire Old Testament while we’re here. They suggest reading 6 chapters a day too keep up. A few of us got together on Wednesday and started reading the Bible aloud, we each read a few paragraphs and move around the circle. An interesting thing happened, something I didn’t expect. While we read, we would interject ideas, questions, back story and connections that helped understanding what was written. We all bring a little extra, that we would not get reading on our own. It was quite spontaneous, and I look forward to reading aloud in the future.
Spontaneous Worship
Other times, usually after evening lectures, un-scheduled worship has been started by some of the students, and it’s quite amazing. I have a feeling that there is quite a pool of musical talent in the school, you can definitely hear it in the instruments and in the voices. I’ve never quite experienced worship that was so pure and electric, there’s no ulterior motive, and it’s not because we have to—it’s because we all want to glorify God.
Photos
Wow, I have taken lots of pictures. I am looking forward to being able to share them with you, but I am afraid I will have to wait until I am able to get into town and find a good Internet Cafe before I can upload them.
That’s about it for now. I’ll be trying to update every Saturday, as it looks like the best time. I miss everyone at home very much, but I am still excited about what to expect this term in Bible School—I feel that God has something great planned.

“The village after our long walk was really strange, because it’s whole essence was way different than at any other City or Town I’ve been on.”
Why? What made it different? Just wondering.
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving Jeremy!

Wow, that sounds amazing. There’s something unique, particular and rare about genuine Christian community–some vibrancy that seems oddly otherworldly. It’s a beautiful thing; cherish it. Glad to hear you’re doing well! I’m guessing our communal blog never got off the ground, but we’re all so busy anyways. Maybe next year, haha… Take care, and enjoy merry old England so I can enjoy it vicariously through you! Peace.
